Extractions Q&A

What are extractions?

An extraction is a tooth removal procedure that safely removes it from the socket. Although keeping an original tooth is always preferable, Family Smile Dental offers extractions for several reasons. You might need tooth extractions due to:

  • Crowding
  • Severe decay or infection
  • Tooth cracking or damage
  • To prepare for a denture

Wisdom teeth extractions are common. They are the molars located at the back of your mouth. Wisdom teeth typically don’t emerge until late adolescence.

As they erupt, your wisdom teeth can push on the other teeth, causing pain, crowding, or an infection called an abscess.

What kind of extraction do I need?

There are two extraction procedures that your dentist at Family Smile Dental will consider before a tooth extraction. The procedure they use and its complexity depend on the position and state of the tooth in question. You might need a:

Simple extraction

A simple extraction works well for visible teeth above the gum line. Your dentist uses local anesthesia to numb the area before loosening, elevating, and extracting the tooth.

Surgical extraction

Your dentist might opt for a surgical extraction if your tooth is not easily accessible. It might be below the gum line entirely or fractured below the gum line. Either way, your dentist needs to make an incision for better access. Usually, surgical extraction requires some form of anesthesia with or without sedation.

How should I care for my mouth after extractions?

Tooth extractions require some recovery time. To make your recovery as swift as possible, your dentist recommends:

  • Avoiding solid foods for some time
  • Avoiding drinking with a straw for at least 24 hours
  • Stopping smoking
  • Rinsing your mouth gently
  • Using an ice pack to reduce swelling

If you have a lot of swelling or any other signs of infection, you should call Family Smile Dental and set up another visit. Your dentist will inspect the surgical site and let you know if you need further treatment.
